COURTNEY Love declares she still has the hots for former flame Edward Norton, who'll "never" marry his fiance, Salma Hayek.

"I love Edward so much," Love, fresh off a songwriting retreat in the French countryside, told Vanity Fair scribe Steve Garbarino in a lengthy aside to an upcoming article, adding that she quietly dated the actor for four whole years. "It's not in anybody's history book that we dated because he managed to scare the vultures off," she says. "I dumped him for a movie role. If that isn't shallow I don't know what is." The refreshingly self-effacing former Hole singer reveals that, "If I die, I've left Edward everything" in her will. "He's a dad to [Love's 11-year-old daughter] Frances. Drew [Barrymore] is her godmother."

As for Mexican actress Hayek, Love says, "He'll never marry her . . . for one, he can barely understand half of what she's saying."

Meanwhile, Love says she's no fan of Charlize Theron, currently co-starring with Norton in "The Italian Job.""She's not in our club," sniffs Love, who counts in her intimate circle Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez."Drew and Cameron are tireless. Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Winona [Ryder] don't like each other, but they're in the club."

Love is also OK with Britney Spears."I have 32 songs [she wrote for her next album "America's Sweetheart"] just staring me in the face," she says. "It's like when Bob Dylan fell off the motorcycle. I have songs to spare. I think I'll give Britney one."Love doesn't just hang with the stars, however. "I'm not Keith Richards," she says. "I do go out with normal people."

Last month, Love placed a classified ad in the Village Voice, seeking a guitarist and drummer for a new band, with the requirement that they "look like a goddess." In fact, she just recruited "fantasy violinist" Emilie Autumn, a ravishing, classically trained musician.

As for her late husband, Kurt Cobain, who she's also "still in love with," his secret fantasy was "he wanted to be a streetwalker," she says. The couple's "biggest problem was that Kurt never told me what a hick he felt like." She only learned that later, and sighs, "I thought I knew everything."
